Literary Titan 5 Start Gold Book Award for ‘Homecomings: 52 Ways Back to Ourselves’ by Elaine Patterson
Rating: 5 out of 5 ★★★★★
Review
Elaine Patterson’s Homecomings: 52 Ways Back to Ourselves is a thoughtful guide that feels both poetic and practical. The book is a collection of 52 reflective soliloquys, each focusing on themes like stillness, silence, and self. Patterson invites readers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their true selves. With each chapter paired with journaling prompts and reflective exercises called “Songlines,” it’s a gentle call to return home, not to a physical space, but to one’s inner being.
What I loved most about Homecomings is its tone. It’s intimate yet universal. Take the chapter on “Solitude.” Patterson reminds us that solitude isn’t about isolation but about befriending ourselves: “When we sit in solitude, we can hear our hearts beat, hear our breath and hear ourselves think without censorship.” I’ve always struggled with quiet moments, but this chapter nudged me to see solitude as an ally instead of a threat.
Patterson also excels in making wisdom accessible. In “Start,” she discusses how beginnings are hard because they push us beyond our comfort zones. I nodded along when she said, “Jumping too soon might mean we have not done the work before the work.” It hit close to home. I’m a chronic procrastinator. Her reminder that hibernation and germination are necessary steps toward growth gave me permission to slow down and trust the process.
In “Shame,” Patterson tackles the difference between guilt and shame, sharing how shame can trap us in feelings of unworthiness. “Shame immobilizes us,” she writes, while guilt can be a springboard for constructive action. It’s the kind of raw truth that feels like it’s spoken by a wise friend who’s been there, too. I found myself reflecting on my own shame scripts and the freedom of reframing those stories.
Homecomings is a beautiful blend of poetry, self-reflection, and gentle wisdom. It’s not a book you rush through; it’s one you savor, page by page. This book would be perfect for anyone feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or craving moments of stillness in their lives. It’s for the seekers—the people who want to come home to themselves and need a guide along the way.

Patterson’s book combines spiritual thought with self-help practices.
This guide’s three sections refer to aspects of a long journey: “Route Mapping,” “Footprints,” and “Rest and Return.” Within these segments are 52 soliloquies starting with the letter S (an idea inspired by Patterson’s free-writing practice). Each soliloquy is prefaced with an apt quotation before moving onto its subject and ends with “Songlines” suggesting practices for readers to do themselves. In the category of “Soul,” for example, readers are advised to find labyrinths (“walking, writing, or tracing meditations”) to walk through, and, before entering them, to “set the intention of befriending your soul.” For “Soften,” she suggests mentally scanning one’s body to notice specific places where tension resides. Patterson also offers journal prompts for each topic; “Seasons” suggests that readers write about their relationship with nature, and “Savour” instructs one to sketch a drawing of a cupboard filled with favorite things. The author ranges widely for inspiration. One section touches on lovely Zulu greetings, the Buddhist story of Indra’s net, and the poet John Donne’s work to illustrate the theme of interconnection. Quotes by figures such as 13th-century poet Rumi, acclaimed actor Lupita Nyong’o, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and martial artist and actor Bruce Lee are found throughout. Patterson’s book is also attractively laid out, with chapter titles in flowy script and pictures of vintage postage stamps. Though carefully planned, the text may be effectively enjoyed by flipping through pages randomly or by reading the chapters in order. Some insights, such as that life is like sewing a patchwork quilt, or repairs of broken pottery make it stronger and more beautiful are familiar but still radiate a welcome sense of comfort and ease. Readers can happily amble through her book “occasionally pausing to admire the sights.”
A gentle and warmhearted life manual.

Homecomings: 52 Ways Back to Ourselves by Elaine Patterson is an interactive collection meant to guide readers on a journey of self-discovery through reflections and prompts, elevating joy, compassion, and wisdom. In Senses, Patterson talks about how sensory awareness deepens presence and creativity, and champions activities like observing nature and journaling sensory experiences to enhance intuition. In Serendipity, Patterson describes the role of curiosity and intuition in allowing meaningful, unexpected events to emerge. She contrasts rigid rationalism with an openness that is transformative through playful engagement. In Strength as Courage, Patterson redefines strength as the ability to embrace vulnerability and adaptability rather than mere endurance. Drawing on the Buddhist principle of equanimity, she speaks on resilience through acceptance, balance, and awareness. Across all, Patterson provides practical exercises to cultivate mindfulness, creativity, and inner strength in daily life.
Elaine Patterson’s Homecomings: 52 Ways Back to Ourselves is a beautifully written and wonderful guide designed to help readers reconnect with themselves. Given the number of entries, it works very well as a weekly practice, similar to a devotional, but its personal nature makes it easy to move at one’s own pace, whether lingering on a topic or moving along at a brisker pace. Patterson shares much of her own experience and that makes the work feel relatable and comforting. I think when you have that, even if you don't know the author, you feel like you do and it creates a safe space, and trust. The most impactful section for me was Silliness, where Patterson discusses how societal expectations suppress playfulness and creativity. Her acknowledgment of perfectionism as a barrier to joy was what I needed to hear in that moment, reinforcing the importance of laughter and spontaneity. With its gentle, encouraging tone and thoughtful entries, this book is a great addition to the nightstand. Very highly recommended.

A Gentle and Wise Companion for Self-Discovery
Your book Homecomings: 52 Ways Back to Ourselves feels like a compassionate companion one that gently guides readers toward reconnection, balance, and authenticity. The structure works beautifully, offering just enough depth in each entry to invite reflection without overwhelm, and I especially loved how you wove mindfulness and playfulness together.
Your section on Silliness struck a deep chord with me the way you described how perfectionism dampens creativity and joy was profoundly liberating. I also appreciated how you reframed strength through vulnerability and equanimity; it felt both grounding and uplifting.
Your writing carries warmth, humility, and quiet wisdom, creating that rare sense of trust and intimacy between author and reader.
There’s such generosity in your writing ~ it feels as though you’re not only sharing what you’ve learned, but also gently reminding the reader that they already know, deep down, how to come home to themselves. It’s a rare and beautiful thing.

I just finished reading Homecomings: 52 Ways Back to Ourselves, and I was so touched by the beauty, wisdom, and gentle guidance that fills every page. Your work feels like a heartfelt invitation to slow down, listen inwardly, and rediscover the parts of ourselves we too often overlook. The way you blend reflection with practice, from Senses to Strength as Courage, creates a rhythm of mindfulness and renewal that feels both grounding and uplifting.
What really resonated with me was your emphasis on presence and playfulness. In a world that often prizes productivity over joy, your reminder in Silliness that laughter and creativity are essential parts of being whole felt like a gift. Each section feels like sitting down with a trusted guide who’s walked this path and is now sharing its light with others.
Homecomings so beautifully combines self-reflection, creativity, and mindful living, and would attract readers who are drawn to journaling, personal growth, and mindful awareness.

A Wonder-filled Delightful Book providing Inner Life with Wisdom and Wellbeing
"Homecomings is such a wonderful book.
Elaine Patterson invites me to engage with exactly what I need to begin my day in reflection. It is really insightful in helping me journal and explore what it is through single words and themes to be at home to myself and to belong in our sometimes very changeable world.
Over the next few weeks as I explore new places on a holiday I hope to continue to reflect on the core attributes who help me to be me - joy, courage, solitude and shadow (are examples) . I like this very much as it is reflection made possible through the careful selection of word choice with Elaine’s own thoughts to stimulate your own. Each word is a guide to a path to what I hope will be a great sense of my own sense of homecoming. Throughout is woven a sense of lightness, playfulness and creativity.
It has given me a moment on days to breathe, to listen, to feel, to trust in myself, to be playful and to discover my own wisdom, wonder and wellbeing. I would recommend this to anyone who is seeking a new voice to discover holistic reflection in their live. Thank-you Elaine”

52 Invitations to the Soul
"This book is the perfect size to be able to take it with you every day. I keep it in my car along with a notebook so I can be inspired before I get out for my park walk. Nourish yourself by flipping open to any page and connect with the words there to stimulate thinking, feeling, writing, or merely to be surprised.
I have used the book and the marvellous cards that Elaine has created to accompany this book (see author for details) with clients as a creative coaching method and it works beautifully. This is superb resource for the journal writer, as a stimulus for mediating on a theme or to share with friends over coffee about the stories the words evoke. All the entries in their own way invite us home to ourselves, from a busy life we can find a sanctuary of calm and reenergising inspiration. A must and a brilliant Christmas gift."

Feed Your Creativity!
"At the beginning of Homecomings are some notes suggesting how to read it..i.e. to dip into or browse its sections, etc. However, once I started I simply couldn’t put it down!
It is a finely crafted work of “invitations’ to venture into a more creative world, wonderfully accessible, and demonstrating a vast knowledge of approaches to the “human condition”
Far from being a dry “workbook”, it is offers exercises for reflection and imagining by covering a range of subjects which we all have thought about / come across / experienced at some time in our lives.
It’s very thoughtfully written, beautifully crafted and spans a breadth of fields including philosophy, psychology, the creative arts, nature writing , human interaction, reflection , meditation and many more.
I thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to enrich their lives by feeding a creativity we all have inside of ourselves."

Testimonials for Reflect to Create! The Dance of Reflection for Creative Leadership, Professional Practice and Supervision
REVIEW ON AMAZON
GROUNDED AND INSPIRATIONAL
As Elaine Patterson explains in her excellent book's Preface, one key strand in the rationale for her writing Reflect to Create ! is the VUCA world as defined by Bob Johanssen- volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. With this in mind, Elaine Patterson offers, I believe, CARE. That is, comprehensiveness, accessibility, relevance and engagement.
- COMPREHENSIVENESS: a wide range of approaches, activities and ideas elegantly blended, yet also stand-alone.
- ACCESSIBILITY : the material is easily understood, which makes the associated delights and challenges particularly vivid.
- RELEVANCE : the approaches, activities and ideas are arguably vital in these times of increasing turbulence.
- ENGAGEMENT : the book invites the reader to be both wise and naive. That is, to draw on the wealth of her/ his experience regardless of age, experience or culture. At the same time the reader is asked, I suggest, also to look at himself/ herself and the world through fresh eyes, being open to new possibilities.
This book is of great value whether one is seeking self-help material and inspiration or one is a ' professional helper' - coach, counsellor, therapist, supervisor - and focussed on supporting others . Ultimately reflection is both an intensely personal and crucially collective activity. This book imaginatively offers these possibilities, that is, ways of reaching out to oneself and others in the dance of life.

Its a big book! - in so many ways - its scope is vast and the depth of the practices and the quotations and poetry you include are, well, immeasurable I suppose in the potential treasures they could reveal. Just massive congratulations Elaine - its a treasure trove of wisdom and loving guidance.

A Substantial Work Badly Needed in our Present Circumstances for All our Sakes
As a professional who has never worked in this field, I am aware that I am poorly qualified to judge this book, but since retirement has allowed time for long overdue reflection and creativity, there is a lot here that I recognise and can respond to. The author displays both detailed scholarly research and an intense emotional and spiritual awareness that are rarely combined. It is a comprehensive manual of ideas and practical exercises drawn from a vast range of disciplines ranging effortlessly through meditation, Buddhism, poetry, shamanism, neuroscience and modern psychology - all aimed at improving the person studying it.
The book provides a concise, accurate summary of numerous well established practices and an introduction to many that are novel to me. A reader feeling overwhelmed by the scale is recommended to select a topic that resonates and try it out; I found no. 98 intriguing. The didactic sections are enriched and enlivened by poetry in quotation or in full and a wealth of quotations from thinkers, leaders, philosophers and scientists ancient and modern.
Thoroughly and copiously referenced, it will make an ideal text book for anybody working in coaching etc. As a work of reference it would suit any good library. In our ongoing crisis of political paralysis and dissolution, I feel our leaders would benefit from learning even a tiny fraction of the insights presented here on reflection and creativity: it could transform our barren void into a " Fertile Void" (page 147).

Find Your Freedom
This is one incredible book – really beautifully designed, with clear sections, quotes, poetry and exercises, it offers a journey on a path less trodden, one that promises fulfilment, joy and creativity. Who of us in this busy world has time to reflect, really? The answer is, all of us – no matter what we are doing – because if we don't, we miss out on the opportunity to learn, evolve and create the life we were meant to lead. If we don't gift ourselves time to reflect and be creative, then we could remain on the treadmill of 'ought, must, and can't' for ever.
This is a book to delve into – just open a page and be inspired. You can read it from start to finish, rigorously undertaking all the exercises and meditations that are outlined, or like me, you can dip in on a daily basis and be guided on that day. For example, today I opened the book randomly on 'An Exercise in Self-Appreciation'. I am asked to think about 10 things I really like and appreciate about myself. This is harder than it appears as I am prone to self-deprecation to the point of sabotage! But when I really think about it, I start to recognise that there are aspects of my Self that I like, but that I'm ignoring because I prioritise other people's needs above my own. The reflection starts and goes deep, and ends in my intention to give myself time and space to write poetry and linger in nature rather than rush back to the office...
Don't be put-off by the sub-title: you don't have to be a leader, a professional in practice or under any kind of coaching or supervision to enjoy this book. It is a book to sit with you for a lifetime, to refer to and relish whenever you feel in need of some inspiration.
I've just seen this beautiful poem by Wendell Berry in it, under the section, Finding Freedom. I think it says it all:
'And the world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles,
no matter how long,
but only by a spiritual journey,
a journey of one inch,
very ardous and humbling and joyful,
by which we arrive at the ground at our feet,
and learn to be at home.

A beautiful library of resources in one place
What I loved about this book, besides its beautiful feel as a book to handle and look through and keep discovering, was the fact I could have at my fingertips such a huge variety of approaches, methods and techniques for different ways to go deeper and wider with an inquiry that I might have and that I could use in work with my clients as issues arise. It is so comprehensive that I have the whole book decorated with post-it notes! Also sitting behind the resources themselves is the delicious dance map of the four movements . Why this is helpful is that it reminds me first I have to prepare myself, the dancer, the experimenter, the 'chercheuse' so that I can suspend old thinking in order to craft more wisely. I love that it gives me a mindful way to come home to myself before I start the work and as well as finding new ways to explore the music of my thinking.

I had the opportunity to learn some valuable concepts and practices from this fabulous book, written with mastery by Elaine Patterson. Incredible synchronicity was generated in participants by the practice of the 4 Listening Fields (page 98) at a recent conference. What Elaine Patterson presents in this book is absolutely enchanting and proposed in a lively and original way. I super recommend it!

Reflect to Create is one of my go to’s – both for myself and to access exercises for my clients
Reflect to Create has been a wonderful resource for me as a supervisor, both for my own reflective practice and as a ready resource of exercises and practices to use with my clients. I use Reflect to Create in two ways – when I have a specific need for a particular practice for either myself or my client I find that the layout makes it easy to find. I also find that sometimes I just open the book at a random page and explore what is there.

Beautiful and creative text, like a work of art
This book is written for the practitioner, and while it deals comprehensively with the latest theories and models, the overall design of the book is aesthetically pleasing and stimulating, making it a colorful read. The coaching/supervision texts I have read so far have been very in-depth, with comprehensive descriptions of the theoretical background and practical models. However, because they were black and white and logical, many of them were less intuitive and less inspiring experientially. This book is very practical and acts as a kind of supervisor for the practitioner, as the practitioner always has it at hand and can refer to it where necessary. The structure of the book incorporates the metaphor of a dance progression and provides a clear guide to the mindset and practice of each phase of coaching and supervision. It is a challenging book that seeks to give an experiential understanding of learning from books on coaching and supervision that goes beyond the existing framework.

Where does one begin with such an excellent body of work all in one place? Reflect To Create is Elaine‘s thought leadership on the dance of reflection for creative leadership. It’s teaching applies not just to the world of coaching and supervision but across professional practice in a range of disciplines. The book is beautiful to look at thereby very inviting for the reader to engage with. This could be years of CPD all in one space. The chapters are clearly titled and invitational. It is abundant with stories and narratives that will enriched any training or programme where you want to bring reflective practice alive. It feels like a labour of love. Elaine has a good use of colour throughout the book which is subtle and original. The author had been very generous with the wealth of materials and content shared in the book. It is very well researched and demonstrates the breadth of creative expansion in the exploration of creative reflective practice. Highly recommend book as a go to book on reflective practice.
I want to take a moment to appreciate your work in this book. I have benefited from its depth, simplicity and invitation - read it through and now doing random exercises! Thank you for this gift.

Elaine brings the essence of creativity to spaces where they have classically become devoid of such richness. Executives, leaders, managers, coaches and mentors will all benefit from the multi-faceted book of almost 200 activities to encourage, believe in and draw out your inner resources to uplift and help face you out to the tasks at hand in your life, and the call to be your true self. The book has helpful theoretical philosophical, spiritual, psychotherapeutic, psychological and practical approaches to engage you in whatever way works for you and your clients. I use this book for my own reflective practise, as well as a resource book for ideas with clients and supervisees. It is a book to acknowledge the whole of your being and to bring joyful and thoughtful answers in new and innovative ways.

A must-have toolkit for every leadership journey
I love new tools and toolkits so I bought this book knowing I can always use support in my leadership journey. In recent years, I've embraced the practice of reflection. At times, I get stuck with knowing how to frame what I am digging for in my subconscious. This is the perfect book for that.
Last year, I was feeling lost in a big decision I needed to make. I chose 5 exercises to guide me through a month of exploration. It was like having Elaine on my shoulder along the way. The exercises were clear and easy to apply. They provided a wonderful structure for my reflection and a lot of freedom. I finally made the decision and haven't regretted my choice and I attribute that to the deep thinking I was afforded with support of this book.
Using the Theory U frame, the book offers up a wide range of exercises and tools from the simple to what some might feel is more unusual. Whether you are new to reflection, or an experienced practitioner, this book will be a wonderful companion on your journey.

Karyn and Elaine are masters of creation – in orchestrating a profound and magical setting and process.
I came in need of refreshing and depart sated in body and soul. Allow yourself this retreat.
Your heart will thank you. And I thank Karyn and Elaine and Tofte Manor.

“The retreat was an absolute joy to be part of. It was skillfully planned and expertly facilitated in a way that seemed effortless (but I am sure it wasn’t!). There was plenty to do or not do as you so wished. The group, the individuals and the energy were allowed to naturally flow. The venue was superb. I felt hugely rejuvenated and think that I achieved very significant personal results in a short space of time: changes that are lasting. I would attend again. Go in with an open mind and heart, be ready to deeply relax and yet challenge yourself, wake up the right brain and BREATHE”

“The Autumn retreat at Tofte Manor was a rare-treat. The spirit of it echoed harmoniously with the magic of the place and created a wonderful space in which to attend to our bodies, minds and souls and harvest.”
“L’esprit de cette retraite automnale a trouvé un écho harmonieux dans la magie de Tofte Manor et a créé un précieux espace de récolte saisonnière pour nos corps, esprits et âmes.”

“This was my second Autumn Equinox Retreat at Tofte Manor with Elaine and Karyn. During these two days I filled my harvesting basket to the brim and left with a deep sense of serene plenitude. The fruit of my labyrinth walk in 2016 had nourished me throughout the yeay and this Autumn’s Labyrinth walk has given me powerful new insights. Tofte Manor’s soul, Elaine and Karyn’s thoughtful, meticulous and caring hosting create a precious space for self reflection in the company of inspiring people”

“I wanted to be able to come to the retreat to recover when the stress in my life was over, but it was not over. Taking the time out to come anyway was such a gift! The retreat provided space for me to just be and to realise the benefit of that. I learned the value of giving that gift to myself and I intend to make that part of my self-support system. Thank you.”

“Just as enjoyable and thought provoking the second time round. I left feeling energised and refreshed - my mind felt like it had been on a two week retreat. Thank you”

‘I experienced a rich, inspirational time in a sanctuary set amidst a beautiful, snowy landscape which offered a journey into a more peaceful, compassionate world. The learning was profound and we had plenty of time to reflect, connect with nature and our creative side, all in the company of warm hearted, friendly people and wise and caring leaders’.

Testimonials from Leaders and Clinicians participating in the Guys and St Thomas’s Hospital Peer Supervision Programme:
“Gratitude for the teaching, experience, gifts, journals, books, …… An undeserved favour.. rare to receive this at work. Thank you for what you have to bring in heart, skill and insight…….”
“Supervision is an element of humanity that has been absent from my life. I feel valued in the sessions for WHO I am. I can bring myself safely into the work we are doing. This is bringing courage and confidence into not only WHO I am as a coach but also as a leader”
“It is absolutely brilliant in every way – especially when I listen to the issues that other people bring, learn from their thoughts and other people’s ideas and observations. I understand what you mean now when you say “when one person works, everyone works!”
“The process has been life changing for me already.. giving me the tools and resources to explore many difficult questions…… It is not just about coaching supervision – it is so much bigger and more powerful. Thank you from the whole of my heart”
